Does your bladder impairs your quality of life?
Do you suffer from urgency that is difficult to suppress?
Do you often feel the need to go to the toilet – even several times a night?
Do you have severe persistent pain in your lower abdomen?
If the answer to one or more questions is yes, you may have chronic inflammation of the bladder, or chronic cystitis.
Chronic bladder inflammation causes three main symptoms:
An average person visits the toilet around 7 times a day. But if you suffer from chronic cystitis, you may need to urinate many times a day – in severe cases this can be up to 60 times during the day and up to 40 times during the night. It is of no surprise that this affects your daily life, making even a trip to the store something to be planned in advance.
You may feel sharp, cutting pain in the pelvic region. It may vary in strength, but it is usually continuous. The pain may become stronger whilst emptying the bladder or during sexual intercourse.
Sense of urgency to urinate can be so strong that you may be afraid of losing control over your bladder. This can limit your daily activities, causing further reduction in quality of life.
How does chronic cystitis develop?
A healthy bladder has a fine mucous protective layer that stops irritant substances in the urine from reaching the bladder wall. In chronic forms of cystitis this protective lining, known as the glycosaminoglycan layer (or GAG-layer), becomes damaged, so it fails to protect the bladder wall. Once this barrier is damaged, irritants from urine can reach the underlying structures and aggravate the neurons. This causes the symptoms we discussed above.
How can Gepan help?
Gepan is a pH neutral, sterile solution containing chondroitin sulphate (0.2%), a natural component of the GAG layer.
When the clinics were cancelled during the pandemic I felt I had no one to turn to for help. I knew that I didn't want to suffer the pain of having no treatment but the support I got from you when you sent me my Gepan was such a relief.
I was nervous about using a catheter and self-instilling my Gepan as I have arthritis in my hands, but after speaking with you really helped. Taking the time to talk me through how to insert my catheter and connecting my Gepan was such a massive help.
You have been a life saver. Thank you for not just sending my Gepan to me when I couldn't get to the hospital but also for arranging for my catheters to be delivered straight to my door. You have been amazing and I don't know what I would have done without you.
I cannot thank you enough for helping me with my Gepan. Just having someone to talk to at the end of the phone and taking the time to listen to how I felt was fabulous.
Mode of action
Glycosaminoglycan normally binds water, creating a hydrophilic mucous membrane, the so-called GAG-layer. This layer stops the irritants in urine to get in direct contact with the bladder wall.
Damaged GAG-layer can cause chronic bladder infection symptoms. Urine contains substances such as potassium ions that can irritate the tissue. This causes constant pressure, frequent urination and persistent pain.
Gepan contains highly purified and specially prepared chondroitin sulphate. Alongside heparin and dermatan, chondroitin is one of the main components of the GAG-layer. That is why Gepan replenishes the protective layer, protects the bladder wall and relieves discomfort.
Gepan is proven through both clinical data and empirical evidence
Gepan’s effectiveness, safety and tolerability are confirmed by 286 patients with chronic cystitis.*
This study showed that all of the main symptoms of cystitis (pain, urgency and frequency) were significantly reduced after 3 months of treatment. In addition to that, both doctors (84%) and patients (82%) were highly satisfied by the treatment.
