Frequent urination

An average person visits the toilet around 7 times a day. But if you suffer from chronic cystitis, you may need to urinate many times a day – in severe cases this can be up to 60 times during the day and up to 40 times during the night. It is of no surprise that this affects your daily life, making even a trip to the store something to be planned in advance.

Pelvic pain

You may feel sharp, cutting pain in the pelvic region. It may vary in strength, but it is usually continuous. The pain may become stronger whilst emptying the bladder or during sexual intercourse.

Strong urgency

Sense of urgency to urinate can be so strong that you may be afraid of losing control over your bladder. This can limit your daily activities, causing further reduction in quality of life.

How does chronic cystitis develop?

 

A healthy bladder has a fine mucous protective layer that stops irritant substances in the urine from reaching the bladder wall. In chronic forms of cystitis this protective lining, known as the glycosaminoglycan layer (or GAG-layer), becomes damaged, so it fails to protect the bladder wall. Once this barrier is damaged, irritants from urine can reach the underlying structures and aggravate the neurons. This causes the symptoms we discussed above.

Mode of action

Gepan attaches to the damaged areas of the bladder wall, just like a liquid bandage adheres onto a wound. As a result, the protective layer is restored, preventing the penetration of irritants into the deeper tissue. This way the bladder is protected from irritants in the urine and cystitis symptoms are reduced.

Glycosaminoglycan normally binds water, creating a hydrophilic mucous membrane, the so-called GAG-layer. This layer stops the irritants in urine to get in direct contact with the bladder wall.

Damaged GAG-layer can cause chronic bladder infection symptoms. Urine contains substances such as potassium ions that can irritate the tissue. This causes constant pressure, frequent urination and persistent pain.

Gepan contains highly purified and specially prepared chondroitin sulphate. Alongside heparin and dermatan, chondroitin is one of the main components of the GAG-layer. That is why Gepan replenishes the protective layer, protects the bladder wall and relieves discomfort.

Gepan’s effectiveness, safety and tolerability are confirmed by 286 patients with chronic cystitis.*

This study showed that all of the main symptoms of cystitis (pain, urgency and frequency) were significantly reduced after 3 months of treatment. In addition to that, both doctors (84%) and patients (82%) were highly satisfied by the treatment.
