Gepan Instill is my go to treatment of choice for patients with PBS/IC. I have transferred the majority of my patients onto Gepan and have had consistently good results over the last three years.
Mr Haq, Lancashire Teaching Hospital
Gepan® instill is used as treatment for chronic forms of cystitis, such as interstitial cystitis, radiation cystitis, chronic recurrent cystitis, and overactive bladder. These disorders are often associated with a damage of the glycosaminoglycan layer of the bladder. Treatment with Gepan® instill can improve symptoms and thus improve patients’ quality of life, as therapy experience has shown.
Results of treatment with Gepan® instill
Results are demonstrated by an observational study(1), examining the efficacy of Gepan® instill in patients with the above conditions. Patients were coming from from Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Sweden, which makes this the largest observational study conducted on GAG-layer replenishment. Over a period of 3 months, all patients were treated with Gepan® instill. In all four groups, the treatment showed a dramatic alleviation of the symptoms. More than 80% of patients and physicians rated the Gepan® instill treatment positively.
It is worth pointing out that the pressure was relieved by a remarkable 50% and the urination frequency was significantly lowered. Many patients noticed an initial improvement of symptoms after the first instillation, although this always depends on individual circumstances. Experience has also shown that symptoms continuously improve over time.
In fact, one study(2) for Over Active Bladder, showed that patients who had monthly treatments for a year continued to have sustained relief from symptoms even 12 months after the therapy had stopped.
In this randomised, controlled study, Gepan® instill was compared to another kind of treatment, Tolterodine Tartrate.
After 12 months of therapy, 72% of Gepan® instill patients noted improvement in symptoms, while just 56% of those on Tolterodine Tartrate said the same.
The, 12 months after therapy stopped, 43% of Gepan® instill patients said they had sustained improvement of symptoms, whereas just 14% of those on Tolterodine Tartrate had this positive experience.
In 2013, a review of treatments for chronic forms of cystisis(3) concluded that the 0.2% chondroitin sulphate as used in Gepan® instill was the favoured GAG-layer replenishment therapy.
For patients, the main thing is that their quality of life can be drastically reduced by chronic forms of cystitis. And with Gepan® instill, it can be improved.
For some people, quality of life can be further enhanced by the ability to administer Gepan® instill themselves in the comfort and privacy of their own homes, without having to take time out of their busy lives to attend clinics.
Patients who would like to take this step can order Gepan® instill directly via this website, or from their urologist, provided their healthcare professional has shown them how to self-catheterise.
