Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome (IC/PBS)
Interstitial cystitis patients are affected by symptoms resembling those of acute cystitis: constant urgency, associated with frequent urination and pain in the pelvic area, but without infectious agents, such as bacteria, fungi or viruses in the urine. In this case, antibiotics don’t help.
Interstitial cystitis mainly affects women, while men make only 10% of cases. For physicians, this difficult chronic disease is a therapeutic challenge. The diagnosis is expensive and the cause is not yet known.
IC/PBS is a disease which is determined by diagnosis of exclusion. This means that the doctor should exclude all other possible conditions. Overlapping syndromes complicate diagnosis.
